Overview
Many organizations—including companies, print shops, and educational institutions—use Windows environments where multiple users log in with individual accounts. When installing Mutoh printers with VerteLith RIP software, administrators may encounter a limitation: VerteLith is, by default, only fully accessible from the Windows user account used during installation. This article explains the limitation, provides official guidance, and outlines best practices for IT administrators in any multi-user environment.
Limitation
- VerteLith stores critical files in:
C:\ProgramData\Mutoh\VerteLith - Only the installing user account has access by default.
- Other user accounts cannot run VerteLith unless given explicit permissions.
Recommended Solutions
- Install VerteLith using an Admin account.
- Preferred method: Use Group Policy to grant write (modify) permissions to the
C:\ProgramData\Mutoh\VerteLithfolder for a Windows group (e.g., “Staff”, “Students”, or another relevant security group). - This ensures any current or future group members have the necessary access automatically—no need to update permissions for each new user.
- Alternative for small environments: Use the AddWritePermission_v2.exe utility to quickly grant write access to all users on the PC. See details below.
How to Grant Group Access (via Group Policy)
Granting group access via Group Policy is recommended for organizations because it is more secure, scalable, and easier to manage. With Group Policy, permissions are automatically applied to the correct users and updated as group membership changes—no need to re-run tools or manually adjust settings for every new user. This approach also fits best practices for IT management and compliance, especially in environments with frequent user turnover.
- Create or select a Windows Security Group for users who need VerteLith access.
- In Group Policy Management, configure a policy to:
- Add Modify or Full Control permissions for the group to
C:\ProgramData\Mutoh\VerteLith
- Add Modify or Full Control permissions for the group to
- Apply the policy.
Consult your IT administrator for Group Policy deployment details.
Alternative: AddWritePermission_v2.exe Tool
AddWritePermission_v2.exe (download attached) is a utility designed to simplify user access configuration for VerteLith in smaller or less centrally managed environments.
- What it does: Grants write permissions to all files and folders under
C:\ProgramData\Mutoh\VerteLithfor all user accounts on the PC. - How to use: Run the tool as an administrator. No further manual steps are required; all users on the PC will have the necessary access.
- Note: For security reasons, use this tool only in trusted environments where all users are authorized to use VerteLith.
